Working as an IT contractor There are two IT contractor roles that are commonly accepted by both the business community and the human relations agency industry: IT contractor and the IT independent consultant. A description of each of these two roles follows. A contractor is anyone who performs services for a client, in exchange for fees, but who is not an actual employee of the client. A contractor is also someone who solely determines the way in which his work is delivered to the client. Being an IT contractor is different from being a consultant in that a consultant merely gives advice and assists in strategy building whereas a contractor actually performs the tasks required. Launching yourself as an IT contractor is a matter of finding a contract with a company, usually through an agency. It's more or less like looking for a job constantly. The market for IT contractors is very strongly tied to the IT job market. If companies are having no problem finding permanent employees to do programming for example, then the market for contractors will be weak. When you re looking to be an IT contractor, you will likely get more work working as an IT securities professional than anything else because as the market for computers is at an all time high so are the hackers out there willing to destroy your company. Contracting is similar to freelancing in that you are not tied to any specific company, however you are required when contracted to do work to fulfill the companies specific regulations while on the job. IT contracting has a lot of potential but can occasionally be a dry workforce like all others. The more fields of expertise you gather on your resume the better your chances are of attaining steady workloads. Contracting also offers you far more freedom than any other position as well. Many IT contractors prefer it over a staff position. If you are looking to work as an IT contractor, you can get the necessary training almost anywhere and can take classes even while you hold your current job. There has never been a better time to become an IT contractor than right now. |
